3 days, 2 nights. Combination tour
Day One
Once you have arrived (recommended by 10am) we will get organised and I will introduce you to your guide.
Then when you are ready you will head off on foot hiking with your Bedouin guide through Rakabat canyon.
This hike involves a lot of scrambling, you will get dusty and is not for you if you are afraid of heights. If you are fit and enjoy scrambling then it is a great little hike. The hike takes about 2-3 hours.
On the other side you will be met by your Jeep and guide for the rest of the trip. He will have prepared lunch for you, so you can rest in the shade and enjoy some lunch before continuing for the rest of the day by Jeep visiting the following places:
Red Sand Dunes This area is very beautiful with many differing colours of rock and sand. You can climb up the sand dune for the wonderful view at the top. Then we like to jump off it & run down it (some silly people also like to roll down it!).
Anfishieh Inscriptions Rock inscriptions of the Camel Caravans on the Anfishieh Jebel from the Thamudic and Nabatean periods.
House of Lawrence A Nabatean structure that Lawrence of Arabia, according to hearsay he used during the Great Arab Revolution to store weapons. But without lingering on the possible academia of this site there is a wonderful view from here.
Burdah Arch This natural rock bridge is set high up on the mountain. So on your tour you will just look at it from a distance… If you wanted to include this scramble in the day please add 35JD to the prices quoted below, this is the cost for the Bedouin guide to go with you to the top of the arch. It can all be done in a day, but you may end up missing the Um Frouth Arch if you finish close to sunset (especially in the shorter days of winter), as the priority is to get to the sunset in time!
Um Frouth Arch For some scrambling (or scrambling watching). This is a natural rock bridge, created by many years of water and wind. You can climb to the top… as long as you are not afraid of heights!
To your Bivouac Camp at Um Momgour (Sunset): Enjoy a delicious Bedouin dinner, the stars and the night in the desert. We will provide mattresses and blankets, we will make a fire, and your dinner will be prepared on it by your guide. This is a simple evening around the fire, star gazing and enjoying the desert environment. This is free camping in the desert away from any tourists camps, and it can be called the 'real' Bedouin experience. Please know there are no bathrooms, for this option. We bring water in Jerry cans for washing hands etc, and bottled water for drinking
Day Two
Today after breakfast at around 7.30am you will set off for a full days hiking. This hike takes you South through the quiet and beautiful Nograh Canyon (more like a wide valley really), until you reach a good place for sleeping not far from Um Ad Dami, This is where you will spend your second night. During the day we will also stop for lunch in the shade, when your guide will prepare your lunch for you, and Bedouin tea on the fire.
The evening will be spent as described above for day one, Bivouac Camping in the desert.
Day Three:
Today after breakfast you and your guide will hike up to the summit of Um Ad Dami.
Um Ad Dami, at more than 1,800 meters is the highest peak in Jordan, offering you a whole new perspective of the desert from its summit. To the South you can see the border to Saudi Arabia, to the North; Jebel Rum. According to your ability climbing to the summit and back to the desert floor takes approximately two - three hours. After which you can relax and enjoy some lunch. We then drive back towards Rum village to visit:
Khazali Canyon This canyon was once used by the local Bedouin to rest in the shade, in the hot summer. You can easily imagine how it would have looked with Bedouin tents, families resting, drinking tea, and children playing. You can find on the canyon walls many ancient rock inscriptions (see if you can spot the inscriptions of feet, and the Orynx).
Small Red Sand Dune You can climb up the sand dune for the wonderful view at the top. Then we like to jump off it & run down it (some silly people also like to roll down it!).
Meet your Camels at the Dune From the sand dune you will meet your Camels & Camel guide. You will take the approx 1.5 hour Camel trek back to Rum village for your onward journey. Usually arriving in Rum village at approx 4pm
* Camel Guide Options*
When you use Camels for a trek you can either use a guide who walks and leads your Camels by a rope, or you can use a guide who is mounted on his own Camel and leads you from there. As this is a short trek it is up to you what you prefer. With the mounted guide the experience is more authentic, and better for talking with your guide (as he is the same height), everyone can travel at the same speed, and you can also take the opportunity to learn how to control your Camel a little yourself over the course of the trek. However, with the mounted guide you also pay for the cost of his Camel so what you decide depends on your budget & preference for the experience.
Practicalities
We will take water, food and bedding to each place for sleeping and set it all up on your behalf. Dinner, Lunch Breakfast & Bedouin Tea is prepared on the fire by your guide. On day two you may have a picnic lunch.
You will need to carry a small day pack with your water, camera & any snacks you want etc.
Please read the protected area guidelines (provided on the Visitor Center maps) in regards to going to the bathroom, litter etc.
As a general rule Camel guides speak less English than other guides (Hiking, Jeep Tour guides).
